hi. i was just wondering if we could update the log in system.

what i was thinking is that it had user name then password and then something like keep me loged in on this computer so that if a user decides to go on the zone from the same computer then he/she won't have to bother loging in.

I don't know how useful that would be especialy for you that you use a college computer. I don't think it would be a good idea to sellect a checkbox like that because somebody else might be able to log on as you and you wouldn't like that.
Anyway it doesn't take long to enter username and password and if you enter user id is even quicker.

How lazy are you anyway?

hmmm, I wana hear more about this. What do the rest of you users think? This is actually a reasonable suggestion, and a lot of other cites do have it. What do the rest of you think?

Too many users here clearly come from public/school compauters and for those types of users this is not a great idea, impersonation etc. I think it's a bad idea. I'll support it t the extent that the user name be remembered on the computer but I think remembering the password is not a great idea (given see reasons I just specified).

If the auto login option is a toggle, and people from a public location choose to check that box, that's their own bloody idiocy. Honestly, I'd hope people would know better than to click such checkboxes from public computers.
Rant about stupid people aside, I think it's a very nice feature. I'd once before ask for the php syntax, so I could create a "favourites link" that would automatically log me in to the zone, but no one ever got back to me on it.
If you're the only one using your computer, auto login is great... If you're not, just don't check the bloody box and everything will be beautiful and such.

I actually like the idea. I mean, a warning could be added to the page for those idiots who don't know better then not to use such an option on a public computer, but for those of us who always use the same computer I think it's a great suggestion. I also don't think it would be difficult to code; though I don't know the code right off hand. I think it would be a cookie...

good idea!
You could always do what hotmail/MSN do now and have a combo box that let's you A. log in as it is now, B. memorize the user name, or C. remember both user name and pass word.<BR> JMO anyway. Only the maintainers of this sight, and computer programers know what is easy to do.

Post 9 by laced-unlaced (Account disabled) on Wednesday, 21-Sep-2005 16:12:26

that idea is cool! i like it

Post 10 by Brooke (I just keep on posting!) on Wednesday, 21-Sep-2005 18:14:52

I like the idea. The people who log in from colleges or public computers obviously wouldn't have to check the box, but at least the option would be there for those of us who did want to use it.

Post 11 by rat (star trek rules!) on Wednesday, 21-Sep-2005 18:25:32

I like the idea myself. People wnat to get on to the zone, not log in all the time.

thanks a lot for your feedback people. Keep it coming please. So far, the majority seem to like it, but I wana hear a bit more feedback.

I don't know... I don't think this is a good idea. It'll just be another cookie installed and I don't see the point when you can just type in the user name and password yourself. I liked this site because it didn't input your user name whenever you opened up the site and I don't think we should change it.
*sexy*

Post 14 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Thursday, 22-Sep-2005 11:48:13

well, as the others said, we could just make it a check box, and well, it'd all go away if you went and cleared your cookies. Or if you logged out, logged back in, and changed the option on the check box, though I'm not too sure about the latter.

Post 15 by Wraith (Prince of Chaos) on Thursday, 22-Sep-2005 17:16:28

You wouldn't *have* to have auto login turned on. It'll be a checkbox you can check, so the choice is still yours.
And cookies aren't really the monsters the internet paranoids have made them out to be.
They preserve site preferences, help webmasters keep useful statistics on visitors and how the site functions with them, they can help customize information for you... They're not the spyware, ad-ware, or virus crap that the web newsletters and warnings make them out to be.
Sure, there are definitely "bad" cookies (cookies which help a site track your activities), but if we ignored things because there were a few bad things about it, we might as well all go jump in the ocean and drown.. because life definitely has its share of bad parts.

Software engineering is the race betwene programmers building idiot proof programs, and the universe producing bigger and better idiots, so far the universe is winning. Thank you Karsten from sc for that so true quote.

I like the idea, sometimes I just don't feel like typing my name.
Only problem I think is, that if you had this, you might have people quick-noting you even if your not there.

Post 18 by maddog (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Friday, 23-Sep-2005 19:43:18

no, we'd still have the log out option for you, and the cite will still log you off after about 5 or 10 minutes.

Post 19 by sugar (Entertain me. I dare you.) on Saturday, 24-Sep-2005 16:31:44

I like it, I don't see why not...

Post 20 by Jess227 on Saturday, 24-Sep-2005 17:50:38

Damn people are you all that lazy to just type in a few characters for your username and then a few more for your password? I also agree with wildbrew that the fact that we shouldn't have a auto log in feature is that those of us who use the school/campus libraries. It's much easier for people to just log right on into the person's username and then use it. It's already happened to a friend of mine. He left his computer and logged out of Aim but had auto log in checked and someone else logged right into his account, and started hitting warn til people were banned off of aim. And when the real person came on I chewed his sorry ass out to find that he never even remembered doing that to me and it wasn't just me, it was others. So I gotta say I'd hate to see the zone get on the auto log in kick.

Post 21 by Brooke (I just keep on posting!) on Saturday, 24-Sep-2005 18:22:04

It seems simple. If you use a computer at a school or library, you wouldn't check the Auto Log-in box. If we had this feature, it'd be up to your own personal preference whether you used it or not. If a person is using a computer from a public place, I'd think they would know enough to be careful and NOT check the box.

Post 22 by rat (star trek rules!) on Saturday, 24-Sep-2005 21:20:44

Anyway, you could make a feature that just puts the username in, not the password. A person couln't take over your nick if they don't know the password right?

Post 23 by Witchcraft (Account disabled) on Sunday, 25-Sep-2005 2:47:40

One thing to add to the mix...If the user name is there you've basically got an audo login because you can let/tell Windows to remember that particular password...But I'm still completely for the idea. 1. What if you are going to a home!!! computer in a few, but at the current moment your significant other is using it, so, you say..."Honey will you log me in to the zone before you quit?" "Sure, the address in your favorites?" "Yep, and the user name is *** and the password is ***..." Much easier without having to go over it letter by letter; especially when my husband's memory is crap!!! Anyways, like has been said, common since, you use public computer you do not let anything audo log you in. I've had a friend do that too, and it was her fault because she either didn't log out or had audo login checked...
